Malachi

The prophecy of Malachi contains these gems,

But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.

I will send Elijah the prophet...he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers.

some interesting Hebrew translation (who was seeking godly offspring?), and important and repeated words that serve grammar and vocabulary learning.

A guided reading workbook like this was exactly what I longed for when I could first begin reading Scripture in Hebrew. Because Hebrew is based on word roots to which prefixes and suffixes are attached, with vowel changes to boot, just looking up a word in a dictionary requires a fair level of mastery. And a word-by-word plod through Scripture, even with the niftiest software, is still a slow and disjointed process. Malachi and our Jonah Copybook circumvent that problem and get you right into the Word and the flow of Hebrew.

The Alef Press interlinear Hebrew translation workbooks differ from most interlinear Bible translations by smoothing out the Hebrew much less. We do not skip any words; when you read Scripture in Hebrew for yourself, you need to know what to make of each word. Here you get the practice and assistance to do just that.

Malachi includes the entire Hebrew text of the book of the prophet Malachi with word-for-word translation, space for copywork and translation exercises, pronunciation and handwriting reference charts, and translation notes.

In the Alef Press series of Biblical Hebrew learning materials, we recommend the Jonah Copybook directly after the primer, but Malachi for after having studied some grammar. Malachi can supplement any Hebrew course.

The cover features a nineteenth century lithograph by French artist Odilon Redon from the National Gallery of Art. To me, it combines the farsightedness of prophecy and hope with the rising of the Sun of righteousness.

cow

This photo is from my great-grandparents' farm. I have always loved it, and, since childhood, it has been the illustration for Malachi 4:2 in the illuminated Bible of my mind's eye. It shows an otherwise calm, matronly dairy cow let out of the barn in early spring. She's tearing across the farmyard and astonishing those sheep in her zeal. And if old mama cow, how much more the calves...
